Judith Guadalupe Ramos Hernández
Instituto de IngenierÃa, UNAM
México
Biography
Judith Guadalupe Ramos Hernández born in Mexico City. She graduated from the Faculty of Chemistry, UNAM, where she obtained a Bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering. In 1998, she obtained a Master degree in Environmental Engineering in the Postgraduate Studies Division of the Faculty of Engineering (DEPFI), UNAM. Then, she obtained a PhD in Water Resources Management from the University of Wales, Bangor, UK in March 2005. Since February 1992, she is a full-time Technical Academic Level C at the Institute of Engineering, UNAM. During her career at the Institute, she has successfully participated and achieved the objectives set out in research projects and other activities related. The experience and specialization acquired in the projects in which she participated until 2000 helped her to successfully enter in the area of integrated water management. The knowledge of quantity and quality of the water allowed her to work in advanced techniques like remote perception for hydrology. After obtaining her PhD she initiated a line of research focused on the management of water sources for irrigation based on the management of remote perception. This has provided support to undergraduate, master and doctoral fellows as well as to Technical Academics and Researchers, where computer equipment and specific programs for various applications has been also supplied. She has applied remote sensing to estimate crop water requirements, hydrogeomorphology, floods, water quality, detect the presence of minerals (in mine tailings and slags) and hydrocarbons. The results obtained have provided the bases to achieve an appropriate management of water sources in a region or basin, which will contribute to the development and implementation of policies of governmental institutions such as CONAGUA and state and local governments. She made two doctoral visits (2002 and 2003) and three research visits: one in 2012 at the Center for Research and Technology Agro-food (CITA), which belongs to the Higher Council of Scientific Research (CSIC), Zaragoza, Spain; and two in 2012 and 2013 through a mobility grant with the Autonomous University of Baja California. She attended three courses at the International Institute for Aerospace Survey and Earth Sciences (ITC) based in Enschede, the Netherlands, one of the institutions with a high academic level in the area of remote perception. As far as scientific production, she is author and co-author of 46 technical reports, most of them has been sponsored projects, of which: two have been published in books; two are used within courses and didactic material and one as a study prior to the preparation of the corresponding official Mexican standard. She is author and co-author in 51 articles presented in International and National Congresses, 13 publications in journals with international and national arbitration. In addition, she has three books, five book chapters, one publication in the Blue Series of Engineering Institute and nine dissemination activities (printed interviews and radio interviews). She has been Technical Advisor in four Bachelor theses and one PhD dissertation, and tutor of three Bachelors and two master theses. She has participated as speaker in 33 continuing education courses and by consulting companies and associations, mainly focused in the field of water and remote sensing. She also collaborated in the development of training courses on wastewater for decision-makers, which strengthens the proper selection of treatment systems. She has also participated in the organisation of workshops and refresher courses, among others. Since she joint the Institute of Engineering, Judith Ramos has been involved in the development of projects of great importance due to their contribution to the solution of national problems in the control and prevention of water pollution, also in the elaboration of national standards, analysing the causes of flooding and crucial criteria for decision making. Recently, she is working in estimating the water balance by calculating the crop water requirements in Irrigation Districts. Finally, the achievements in her professional training have been very useful, particularly those obtained during her PhD studies, since she was able to cover all the areas involved in the integrated water management looking at its quality and quantity. She has also collaborated with research groups in the United States of America, the Netherlands and Spain and to date with research groups throughout the country.
